Will you help me decide which brand sewing machine to buy and what model would you suggest? Thank you.?

Hi,
I recently lost my faithful Singer sewing machine of over 23 years that I use for quilting, home decor and general mending projects. I need to replace it Do you recommend Singer, Bernina or Brother? Why and what model. I do both hand quilting and machine quilting and can’t spend a huge amount of money. ($ 300. max) Computerized is good and I will use some specialized stiches but I’m not the embroidery queen or anything. I do want auto thread feed and auto buttonhole maker. Thanks guys!

My deepest sympathies – it’s really hard to lose a trusty friend. No definite answers, just some thoughts. 1. In my quilt guild, a lot of the members really love Bernina but I have no idea on price range. 2. If you were very comfortable with your Singer, looking at new ones is a good place to start. 3. If support, service and training matter much to you, get your machine at a place which offers support, etc. like Jo-Ann’s or local sewing machine dealerships. Also, some sell used machines they took as trade-ins. 4. On many computerized machines, I hear you have to keep magnets away or they fry. 5. If you decide you prefer the prices at Wal-mart or Target, stick with a major brand like Singer or Brother, where there’s a large parts & service base. 6. You can get TERRIFIC bargains at garage sales if you can spend the time shopping and testing.
In case you’re wondering, I currently own 2 Singers, 2 Kenmores, and a New Home MemoryCraft6000 ($2 at a garage sale!). Good luck and happy shopping!
